I Just Used The Phrase I Used To Hate On An Unsuspecting Mom

March 28, 2013 By Christine 9 Comments

When I was a new mom in 2003, I had the luxury of being able to stay home full time with my son when he arrived.  Before he came, I envisioned long afternoons of cuddling and bonding, making gourmet meals for my husband and catching up on all of the books on my night stand that had gone ignored while I worked full time.  It was going to be fabulous….

….and then our son got here.

Those long afternoons of cuddling were actually marathon sessions of feedings, diaper changes, bounce walking and repeating.  The books on my nightstand got dustier and covered with pacifiers, extra diapers and parenting books (that didn’t get read, either).  And gourmet meals?  Uhm, yeah.  We relied on the kindness of neighbors in those first few weeks:  the people who brought us food instead of baby gifts were (and still are) our favorite people.  Nothing said, “We know what you are going through” like a home cooked meal (and if they came bearing a bottle of wine?  I kissed them full on the mouth.).

After herculean efforts by both myself and my husband, we got a routine down and we stuck to it like glue.  Everyone in the house functioned better if they knew what was going to happen next.  Me?  I just focused on  getting to the end zone:  bedtime.  The days became weeks and the weeks became months.  Truly, each day was a lot like the one before it and I kind of suspected that the next day was going to be a lot of the same.  Monotony was the name of the game and this brings me to The Phrase I Used To Hate.

I used to hear The Phrase I Used To Hate an awful lot in the grocery store.  It was often uttered by a smiling elderly lady or by another mom who clearly had gotten rid of her children as evidenced by the  fact that they were not with her but her grocery cart would be filled with organic milk, Popsicles and juice boxes (that, and she’d have make up on…).  They would see me wandering in the aisle, sleep deprived, sans makeup and pony tail clad and they tilt their head and coo, wait for it, “Awww, I miss those days….”.

Usually, The Phrase I Used To Hate was accompanied by some story about when their children were little and they would smile ruefully at me and walk away. I would stare after them and think to myself that there is no way that I would miss feeling so tired that I want to throw up.  There’s no way I will miss considering adding breast milk to coffee because we are out of milk.  I couldn’t possibly imagine “missing these days” because I still kind of missed my old “child free world”.  When the Phrase I Used To Hate Was uttered,  I always resisted the urge to say to these women, “Hey, lady, I have cuticles that are almost covering my fingernails and my toes haven’t had a pedicure in months.  Why don’t you take this little bundle of joy and relive the glory days while this mama goes to see her manicurist?”.  I’m proud to say that I didn’t actually say these words out loud….but I came close once or twice.

As all parents will tell you, things get easier as the years go by.  The kids got older, became actual little people and things became just plain fun (for the most part….potty training does NOT count).  Life became a busy jumble of soccer games, track practice, school activities and scouts.  The day that we realized that we had gone on a day trip to NYC without a stroller, baby bag or diapers, we felt like we had arrived.  Those sleep deprived days had become a distant memory.

Recently, I was in the grocery store, buying organic milk, Popsicles and juice boxes while my kids were at school (ahem, yes, you can see where this is going….).   As I wandered the aisle, I came upon a mom and a newborn in an infant carrier.  Nestled in pink and with a face of an angel, I was taken aback at how serenely beautiful a sleeping baby is and without thinking, I said, “Aww, I miss those days…”.  And I meant it.  Oh dear.  I just used The Phrase I Used To Hate on an unsuspecting victim.  If she’s reading, my sincere apologies:  I didn’t see it coming either.

As I walked away from her (I can report that I stopped myself from telling her that my daughter had once been that small), I realized that while I didn’t miss the monotony of those early months,  I missed the simplicity of my days.  I missed the fact that our days revolved around Sesame Street, nap time and the next bottle.  There was so much less expectation when you had a newborn:  you couldn’t go anywhere easily and no one really expected you to.  But, now that my kids are easily portable, we are on the run constantly and our days are a chaotic jumble and very few resemble each other.  We’ve traded monotony for chaos.

A dear friend is having a baby very shortly and while I’m excited for her, I’m also a tiny bit sad because it reminds me of a time gone by in our house.  I can’t wait to hold that tiny bundle, get a good whiff of new baby smell and reminisce.   But, I promise, that, when I’m dropping off a lasagna that will feed them for a week, I will only say The Phrase I Used To Hate quietly to myself.  That, and I will make sure she gets out to have a mani/pedi while I watch that sweet angel.

Oh, I can relate! I want to say it to new moms all the time! But lately, I’ve graduated to the phase of “Ah, you’re not gonna APPRECIATE these days, so lemme just have that baby right now and let ME raise him!!!” Ha! I went to a wedding last night with my teen — and she had to physically restrain me from snatching up 3 separate toddlers! They were SO adorable!!

I remember women telling me that they missed those days and I would smile and think okay, maybe one day I will miss them but right now I’m going nuts. Now I can’t help myself, I see a mom with a sweet baby in a shopping cart and even if the little one is crying and the mom trying to distract her I still think, oh, I miss those days. (But I don’t tell the poor woman!) It goes so fast. People tell you that but you really don’t know it till you have kids of your own! Great piece!

I’m one that doesn’t miss them at all. Yes, a sleeping child belonging to another mom is an angel. A screaming child belonging to anyone is still excruciating for everyone. I don’t miss either, but I can appreciate the first.

My youngest is 23. I’m glad to have my “no babies” days back!

my ‘baby’ goes back to Temple after spring break this weekend!! But, you asked what phrase your mother said that has found it’s way out of your mouth that you swore would never happen: You have the dawdling child, the one who turns around looking behind them while you are literally dragging them forward……you breath deep and BAM, there she pops outta your mouth: “Remember Lot’s wife? She looked backwards and turned into a pillar of salt….and do you know what happened then? Huh? A cow came up and licked her!’ I grew up in farm country and everyone had at least one cow and a salt lick in the pasture………

Children are a precious gift that we get to hold onto for a few short years, then they leave us. šŸ™ So sorry for being dramatic, my daughter is a junior in high school and I know that in 2 years she’ll be in college… I don’t necessariy miss the days of infancy, I just mourn at how fast she is growing up. I want to hold onto her forever!

My boys are now 6 and 8 and I find myself exactly where you are. I can’t help but coo over other peoples babies and reminisce about the times mine were that small. Then the baby starts fussing or poops and I’m more than glad to hand them back to their parents! I miss those moments, then I have to stop and yell at my boys for fighting or get up and physically separate them and I think ‘they grow up into “that” too fast, so no thank you, no more babies for me!’.

When I was thinking about how I wanted to write ab When I was thinking about how I wanted to write about eczema for a project with @mediqcme, I was reminded of a time a few years ago when I had the world’s worst case of poison ivy.
After a marathon session of gardening, I’d managed to swipe a huge swath of poison ivy oil across my chest, left flank, and left side of my face.
Within days, I was in agony: huge, weeping crusted pustules covered my body and as the days turned into weeks, my skin screamed at me for attention at every given moment.
I couldn’t sleep.
I couldn’t wear my favorite clothing because my lesions were constantly weeping.
And then came the steroids.
That’s when the real hell began. I’m a high energy person without the aid of stimulants (I really should switch to decaf, I know) and steroids make me a next-level handful, trust me.
For six weeks, every decision I made revolved around my skin: how to sit comfortably, what position made sleep come more easily, even bathing became a chore because nothing helped allay the itch that seemed to come from the inside out.
I was miserable, yes, but thankfully, I eventually healed and soon forgot about my six weeks of poison ivy hell.
But, 9-year-old Elizabeth told me that living with atopic dermatitis means that itching from the inside out is a way of life for her and, in her words, itchy skin makes her feel ā€œbadā€ most of the time.
Head to my IG stories to read more about life with #atopicdermatitis and how it affects almost 31 million Americans (10 million of which are kids).

We will be discussing what atopic dermatitis is, how it affects families, and the resources that you can trust if you, your kids, or family members are navigating a new (or ongoing) atopic dermatitis diagnosis.

Bring your questions because we will be answering them live!

ā€œYou’ll always remember the firsts but the lasts are the most precious,ā€ he wrote.
She’s our last.
She was the last baby to walk with her fat feet on our hardwood floors.
She was the last one to go to kindergarten.
She was the one who napped on the go as her brother attended Mommy and Me classes and soccer practices.
She was the last one to have a single digit birthday in our house.
But for all of the firsts that have been afforded to her brother, she’s our first in so many ways.
She’s the first one to navigate freshman year during a hybrid school system in the midst of a pandemic.
She’s the first one to forge her way on a cross country team with teammates who have never had to race virtually.
She’s the first one to have had to face a high school career that looks infinitely different than the one her brother (a senior) has enjoyed.
She’s our last, yes.
But she’s the one who is teaching us to savor the moments when we get to see her race on the track while we wear masks and socially distance.
She’s the one who is brave enough to lean in to hybrid learning, mask and all, so that we can figure out how best to educate our kids in the coming years.
And, yes, she’s our last one to go to high school but she’s the first one to teach us what we really need to know in the midst of a pandemic.
The lastest really is the bestest.

So. I did a thing today. I went to a NASCAR race. So.
I did a thing today.
I went to a NASCAR race.
My first.
During a pandemic.
I know, I can't believe it, either.
But, when you are married to a man who eats, sleeps, and breathes cars, eventually you come to a point in your marriage when you realize that a trip to a major speedway is a marital inevitability.
I managed to avoid it for 21 years but today was the day.
And I have thoughts, in no particular order:
1). I was not prepared for the noise of the engines. And by "noise," I mean the constant reverberation deep into your soul for three. solid. hours. Loud does not begin to cover it.
2). I watched 38 cars whizz by me 301 times. I enjoyed seeing #43 drive by 301 times. Car #32? Not so much (#32 finished 35th. I was fine with that).
3). Every single person in the grandstands complied with the mask restrictions. It's not that hard, people. I watched thousands of people do it today. You can, too.
4). We didn't see a single confederate flag. #FistBumpNASCAR
5). I couldn't hear a thing my family said for three hours. Actually, almost four hours. This was a major bonus.
6). Earplugs are necessary. Again, see #5.
7). The universe did me a solid and provided me with an overcast day as I did my "wifely duty" and pretended to be interested in the parade of cars that monotonously sped by me every thirty seconds. If it had been 100 degrees (like it apparently was last year), this status would be very different.
8). 301 laps takes a really long time. Like, a really long time.
9). I think NASCAR would have a bigger fan base if they served frozƩ wine and provided charcuterie. Hear me out on this, NASCAR.
10). Watching my husband and Fruit Loop #1 scream at each other (because noise and ear plugs) and gesticulate wildly at whatever was happening on the track while they soaked in their first NASCAR race together made it all worth it. I think. #PleaseLetUsHaveUsedEnoughHandSanitizer.

143 days. I took this picture 143 days ago. I was 143 days.
I took this picture 143 days ago.
I was in Palm Springs and I had taken a tram ride with @mommybacktalk to San Jacinto National Park.
We hiked several miles for this view and I remember feeling relaxed and free of stress.
We were in PS to attend a conference and the whispers of an unknown virus were starting to swell.
ā€œA virus out of China.ā€
ā€œThere’s no vaccine and it’s highly contagious. It could become a pandemic.ā€
ā€œWait. Corona is a beer...ā€
Though we didn’t shake hands with attendees, for the most part, we went about the business of ā€œnormalā€ life.
At a dinner with @monicagsakala and @mommybacktalk, we threw back glasses of wine and talked long into the night over gourmet macaroni and cheese that tasted like actual heaven on a fork.
We talked about politics, current events, and books we loved. No stories about kids, no griping about husbands. Just intelligent, stimulating conversation that I now realize was going to become a lifeline only a few weeks later.
I have no pictures of that dinner.
Just the memory of being with two good friends when life didn’t feel so fractured.
Now those friends are hours away, whether by car or plane, and I think about that night in CA almost every day.
The me from 143 days ago had no idea what was coming.
The me at the top of the mountain in the picture didn’t know that she should have savored the fresh air more, that she should have relished what it was like to be one in a crowd on a tram headed to scenic vistas.
I’ve been quiet here on IG because everything feels too much.
I’ve been trying to keep my family safe and maintain what’s left of my sanity in a world that feels prickly and dangerous.
I’ve been wearing a mask, using hand sanitizer, and obsessively watching the news for a sign that we are all going to be okay.
I’ve been looking for small pockets of joy in the middle of the dumpster fire that life has become.
And, I’m realizing that we are all climbing one hell of a mountain, together.
And, at some point, the view is going to be gorgeous.
We just have to keep climbing.
No matter how much our legs are telling us it's too hard to go on.
#keepclimbing

ā€œMom? Can I hang out with my friends tonight? I ā€œMom? Can I hang out with my friends tonight? I need a ride.ā€
Those words seemed to be on auto repeat last summer.
He had a social life.
I had the driver’s license.
He wanted to stay a half hour later.
I gave him all kinds of hell for upending my evening so that he could hang for a bit more with his friends.
But then he bought his car.
And passed his driver’s test not long after.
My car hasn’t found him folding his lanky frame into the passenger seat in almost a year.
I miss seeing him there.
Tonight, I wanted to see my friends for a couple of socially distanced glasses of wine and I didn’t want to drive.
ā€œHey, I’d like to hang out with my friends tonight. Can you give me a ride?ā€ I said to him.
And of course, he took every opportunity to give me a dose of my own medicine in jest:
ā€œYou know, I have plans this evening, too, Mom.ā€
ā€œI want you outside by 830p because I’ll be waiting.ā€
ā€œNo, you can’t stay til 9, I don’t care what the other moms are doing.ā€
It was a full circle moment.
After he picked me up and we swung by the local ice cream shop so he could get a treat for him and his sister, we drove home with the windows down on a summer night.
For a few moments, it was like old times.
I’ve missed him, even though we’ve been home together for months in quarantine.
And when Def Leppard blared on the radio and he dialed it up while singing every word, I remembered what it was like to be seventeen. @joe_burke0227
