“Hi, Mrs. Burke. Have you ever considered putting your daughter on a track team?”
Those were the words her gym teacher said to me when she was in kindergarten. He was also the coach for the high school cross country team.
“Your girl is a runner. Get her on a team,” he said.
And so we did.
We enrolled her in a church youth league where she ran track events until she was able to join her middle school team.
When she hit high school, her kindergarten gym teacher was waiting for her.
“You ready to train?” he asked.
And she took off from there, ponytail always flying behind her.
Every race, he’s on the sidelines, yelling encouragement, words he knows she needs to hear.
There’s a hug for a race well raced and a “I expect more next week” when they both know she could have done more.
Today was her last race as a junior.
We are heading into senior year and we will start the long sports parenting goodbye after 13 years of watching her run.
Here’s to the gym teachers who see hidden potential on the kindergarten playground.
Here’s to the art teachers who encourage the talent that will make the world beautiful.
To the bus drivers who faithfully and safely care for our kids on the roads.
To the lunch ladies who ladle a little extra for the kids who need it most.
To the school nurses who bandage and heal even the smallest of knees.
To the music teachers who endure the screeches that eventually become harmony.
Here’s to those who cheer kids from the sidelines and show up day after day, year after year.
The world could use more of you.

On the first day of preschool, I knelt down and st

On the first day of preschool, I knelt down and straightened Fruit Loop #1’s collar. I smoothed his baby hair and kissed his palm, just like in the book “The Kissing Hand.”
“If you miss me, just put your hand on your cheek and remember that I’m thinking about you.” His looked at me with his big hazel eyes and gave me a big smile. He adjusted his new backpack on his shoulders and eagerly looked at the door.
And then, it was his turn to be welcomed into the classroom.
I said “Have a great day!” to the back of his curly hair. He was off on his first big boy adventure.
Later that morning, I cried to a friend and sobbed because my little boy didn’t look back when I said goodbye.
“That’s how you know you’ve done your job. When they don’t look back and they are excited for what’s ahead, you’ve raised them to leave you. That’s how it’s supposed to be,” she said gently.
You raise them to leave you. Ooof. That hit me in the feels.
I’ve waved to the back of his head (and backpack) so many times over the years that you’d think it would be easy by now.
But every goodbye feels more urgent these days. He’s in “Grade 16” now and he’s about to head into adventures that I won’t get to hear about on the daily.
His little face won’t recount the details of his preschool day over a McDonald’s Happy Meal.
Instead, I’ll wave to the back of his head and hope that he turns to look over his shoulder from time to time to smile and say, “I’m still holding your kiss in the palm of my hand, Mah.” #lifewithteens #lifewithteensandtweens #lifewithteens❤️ #parentingteens #momtruth #motherhoodunplugged #keeperofthefruitloops

Me: “What time do you want to leave for the Acad

Me: “What time do you want to leave for the Academic Excellence Awards?”
Her: “Hear me out: Why don’t we skip the pomp and circumstance celebrate over dinner and dessert?”
Me: “……….”
Her: “Admit it. I’m not wrong.”

She wasn’t wrong. 💕

We traded pomp and circumstance for a big ass piece of cake and it was worth every single bite.

On the heels of a week where we celebrated women, may we keep raising daughters who know how to set boundaries better than we did.

These girls are blazing trails and they are lighting our way.
